Marsa Alam's reef walls and wreck sites sit roughly 230 km south of Hurghada, and divers who want that water clarity without relocating their whole trip are booking it as a day run in 2026 more than ever.
Why this matters
Hurghada's house reefs got hammered by boat traffic and anchor damage over the past decade. Marsa Alam's sites — Elphinstone, Abu Dabbab, the Dolphin House at Sha'ab Samadai — sit further from the cruise-ship lanes and hold visibility that regularly beats 20 meters in 2026, versus the 8-12 meters typical closer to Hurghada in peak season.
That gap is the entire reason this day trip exists. You're trading three hours each way in a van for dive sites that Red Sea liveaboard operators still build entire itineraries around. For divers already holding an Open Water or Advanced certification , the math works. For everyone else, it takes more thought.
Who this is for
This trip fits certified divers with at least a handful of logged dives who are staying in Hurghada for a week or more and want one standout day away from the house reef rotation. It also fits underwater photographers chasing dolphin encounters and reef sharks that show up more reliably near Marsa Alam than in Hurghada's bay. It does not fit anyone on their first or second dive ever, and it does not fit a traveler with a tight one-day layover who also wants to see Luxor — those two don't share a calendar slot.
Dive count and site selection
A day trip that only nets you one dive site after a three-hour drive each way is a bad trade. Ask for the confirmed site list before you pay — Elphinstone and Abu Dabbab in the same day is a strong itinerary; a single unnamed "house reef" stop is a weak one.
